Esterification combines a carboxylic acid with an alcohol to form an ester and water. Esters are essential intermediates across the chemical industry — used to make plasticizers, acrylate and acetate esters for coatings and adhesives, as well as flavor and fragrance compounds. Running this reaction with a solid acid catalyst instead of liquid sulfuric acid avoids corrosion, simplifies downstream separation, and reduces waste acid disposal.
How the Catalyst Works
Strong acid cation exchange resin supplies fixed sulfonic acid sites that catalyze the reaction between the carboxylic acid and alcohol in the same way dissolved sulfuric acid would, but without the acid ending up in the product stream. The macroporous structure gives the resin a large internal surface area, allowing reactants to diffuse in and products to diffuse out efficiently, which supports high conversion even with bulkier ester molecules.
